Dental Implants Sydney

If you have a missing tooth, a dental implant is an ideal dental solution to replace it. This popular dental treatment is an alternative to replacing a tooth with a bridge. Both look great and improve the function of your teeth, but the dental implant stands on its own without the need to alter surrounding teeth, which is normally required to hold a bridge in place. Our skilled team at Pitt Street Dental Centre here in the heart of Sydney CBD have placed many dental implants, so you can be confident you will receive the best care available.

Dental Implant Technology

Normally, when a tooth goes missing, only the part that you can see is replaced. Dental implants are used to replace both the tooth and the root, which is the part of the tooth that you don’t see. Replacing the tooth root can save you problems like jawbone shrinkage and shifting teeth in the future.

A dental implant is a holistic option that replaces the entire tooth, which is almost like having a whole, new tooth.

The dental implant is a titanium post that is planted into the jawbone to take the place of the missing tooth root. As your body heals through a process called osseointegration, bone and tissue forms around the post as your body begins to treat it like a natural part of you. Once healed, a dental crown will be placed onto the post, which will then look and function like a brand new tooth.

Candidates for a Dental Implant

Candidates for a Dental Implant-Dental Implant Sydney-Pitt Street Dental Centre

A dental implant is a popular solution to replace a missing tooth because it stays in place and functions like a real tooth. Because it takes a minor surgery to place the post into the jawbone, there are some requirements for getting a dental implant, which are listed here.

Healthy bone is required for osseointegration to take place. The jawbone where the implant will be placed must be strong enough to hold the implant and then heal around it.

There must be sufficient bone density and tissue for this to happen, and we will do a full screening to ensure your bone is healthy for this process. If you have been told previously that you cannot get a dental implant due to bone loss, we may still be able to help with a bone graft.

Healthy gums are important so the tissue can heal with the implant. Gum disease such as gingivitis and periodontitis are not conducive for dental implants, however, we can treat gum disease. When your gums are healed, we will then reevaluate and see if your mouth can hold a dental implant.

Oral hygiene is important to ensure the implant and crown lasts a long time. It is also important during healing for the quickest and safest recovery, so a commitment to oral hygiene is necessary.

Bruxism or teeth grinding might interfere with dental implant healing and even after healing. If you grind your teeth, let us know and we may be able to help. There are treatments for teeth grinding, including mouth guards to keep your teeth safe.

Getting a Dental Implant

Getting a Dental Implant-Dental Implants Sydney-Pitt Street Dental Centre
There are two phases of treatment for getting dental implants.
1 Black

Phase 1: Placing the Implant

During this phase, the titanium post will be placed into your jawbone during a minor surgery. You will then be given instructions on caring for your new implant and what you can do to expedite healing. We will give you an idea of how long it will take to heal and return for the placement of your crown.

2 Black

Phase 2: Securing the Abutment and Crown

Upon returning, the abutment and crown will be placed onto the healed implant. Your gums and bone should be healed by now, which relieves it of sensitivity. First, a small connector post called an abutment will be placed on the implant post. The dentist will then take impressions of your teeth, which will be used to create your crown and will schedule the appointment to place it. When you return, the crown will be secured onto the implant and abutment and you are ready to go!

After-Care for Your Dental Implant

A dental implant requires minor surgery and it is normal to experience post-treatment discomfort and swelling. You will be given specific instructions for your situation. However, the following are general guidelines that you can expect in either phase.
Z

Avoid smoking while the implants are healing because this can lead to implant failure

Z

If your face is swollen, try an ice pack to reduce swelling and calm pain

Z

Take an over-the-counter pain medication or prescribed medication to reduce pain and swelling; your dentist would have discussed this with you before treatment

Z

Clean your teeth with a soft toothbrush and floss, avoiding the area of the implant for the time your dentist recommends

Z

Avoid hot liquids that can aggravate the wound area

Z

Gently rinse your mouth with warm saltwater to keep bacteria in check

Dental implant surgery is a minor procedure and most patients heal within the allotted time. We screen all of our patients before getting implants to ensure you are a candidate and to help reduce the chance of complications.
