Emergency Dentistry Sydney

When dental emergencies happen, a dentist is the best option to help. Typical Emergency Departments (ED) are generally not equipped to handle dental issues. However, our dental professionals have the tools and the skills to quickly reduce pain, diagnose the issue and then rectify it.

Here at Pitt Street Dental Centre, we understand that when you are in an emergency situation, you want to have it attended to as quickly as possible. If you call us before 1pm Monday to Friday, we will see you on the same day.

What is Emergency Dentistry?

Emergency dentistry may be required at any time of the day or week and is a specialised service designed to quickly address tooth pain, infection, swelling or trauma to your teeth.

This service is designed to get you dental care as quickly as possible so you can get on with your life.

Typical Dental Emergencies

Dental emergencies include accidents that cause trauma to your teeth, as well as infections that can cause intense pain, as it spreads into the root and nerves of teeth. When this happens, the ideal action is to get dental treatment as soon as you can. The following are typical dental emergencies that we see at here at Pitt Street Dental Centre in Sydney:

s

Tooth pain or toothaches

s

Jaw pain (may radiate to ear) from unknown source

s

Broken teeth

s

Chipped and cracked teeth

s

Loose teeth

s

Knocked out tooth or teeth

s

Painful wisdom teeth

s

Lost filling

s

Lost dental restoration

s

Gum abscess or ulcer

s

Emergency root canal therapy

If you are experiencing pain, typical over-the-counter medications only subdue the pain but do not remove the problem. In some cases, over-the-counter medications may help your pain to subside completely, however, that doesn’t mean the problem simply disappeared. Unknown pain may be due to a problem such as an infection and if left untreated it can spread, leading to more complicated dental treatments or unnecessary pain.

Dental Emergency Home Care

When you have a dental emergency, it may take a few hours before your scheduled appointment with us, and will depend on the availability of the dentist on call and your location. Until then, the first thing to do is to remain calm. The following are some tips to help until you get in to see us:

l

Toothaches or severe tooth pain can be dealt with first by taking an over-the-counter pain medication if you are not allergic to them. Pain may be due to infection or trapped food debris. In some cases, trapped food debris can aggravate an infection. In either case, gently brush and floss, paying particular attention to the area of pain to watch for particles or debris.

Call us and schedule an emergency dentistry visit, right away. Then try gently rinsing with warm salt water to help remove any particles. Use an icepack on your face near the pain, if needed.

l

Pain and swelling in the jaw may be due to an infection or problematic wisdom tooth. An over-the-counter pain medication can temporarily help reduce both pain and swelling. Call us right away and schedule an appointment so we can stop the spread of infection or diagnose the root cause of your pain. Try an ice pack to calm the pain and reduce swelling and rest with your head elevated.

l

Broken teeth and restorations can often be repaired, but while you are waiting for your appointment, gently rinse with warm salt water to reduce harmful bacteria. Many times, broken teeth don’t hurt but if it does, try an over-the-counter pain medication, if needed.

Save the piece of the broken tooth or restoration and call us to schedule an appointment. Bring the tooth or restoration with you to the appointment, as we may be able to save it.

l

Knocked out teeth are often caused by accidents during sports or a vehicle crash. If you can find the tooth, save it. Place it in a container of mild salt water or whole fat milk as soon as you can, and handle the tooth as little as possible. Call us right away to schedule an appointment and let us know what happened and we will do what we can to save your tooth.

l

Chipped and cracked teeth may or may not be painful, and if not painful, should still be treated right away. Over-the-counter pain medication may alleviate pain and swelling. Rinse your mouth with slightly warm salt water to reduce harmful bacteria and clean the damaged tooth and call us to schedule your emergency dentistry visit.

Some situations may require a visit to the ED, such as:
s
Profuse bleeding that will not stop
s
Broken, cracked or fracture jaw or facial bone
s
Significant facial swelling and redness due to unknown source
s
Outside clinical hours
